HYDROGREEN: The first hydrogen fuel cell in Spain

IDEA, in collaboration with four distinguished partners: CETENMA, REGENERA, Grupo Caliche and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, are developing the first HYDROGEN fuel cells from renewable sources for GREEN logistics and transport.

Objective

Purpose The development and application of a hydrogen fuel cell as a sustainable fuel alternative, obtained from existing renewable photovoltaic sources, and its testing and simulation in real industrial environments, improving efficiency and reducing costs and emissions in order to increase the competitiveness of companies in the sector in the CARM.

Technological Areas

The HIDROGREEN project focused on industrial research in different technological areas.

The generation and storage of green hydrogen using renewable energy.
The development of a fuel cell to cover energy demand.

Finally, the technologies developed will be implemented and validated in real industrial environments in the transport and logistics sector.

Benefits

In contrast to closed cathode hydrogen fuel cells, which use compressors to inject oxygen, , this fuel cell uses fans to draw in the air required for combustion and to cool the cell, achieving greater energy efficiency. This development has also contributed to other innovations such as catalyst-deposition systems that optimise the use of the catalysts and the speed of loading.

IDEA's role

Owing to our experience in the development of industrial projects in BIM – INDUSTRY 4.0, we are in charge of developing the structural calculation and definition of the designs for H2 generation systemsas well as the common and specific installations: electricity supply, piping installation, maintenance and storage areas, energy management.

Once the application case was defined, we developed the BIM process that will facilitate the future integration of the fuel cell developed by the UPCT in the forklifts of Grupo CALICHE..
