Whatis BIM technology?
BIM stands for Building Information Modeling, a collaborative working methodology for the creation and management of a construction project. BIM modelling consists of managing detailed information related to a building, including both design and maintenance aspects, in order to avoid wasting resource and to more accurately manage time in the construction of the structure, or to avoid unnecessary future remodelling costs.
With BIM modelling a better data management during a building’s lifetime is achieved by using dynamic building modelling software in three dimensions and in real time. This technology faithfully collects construction information in digitalised form for subsequent use in the event of reconstruction or maintenance.
Programmes that are based on BIM modelling are TEKLA, REVIT, CADWORX, SYNCHRO. IDEA has been working with TEKLA for 10 years. This has been one of the foundations on which our growth has been based since 2008 when the company was founded.
TEKLA is a metallic structure programme that allows us to design the most complete digital model possible, in which geometric, production and economic information is associated with each volume.
BIM is a new step towards the globalisation of the digital construction model for all the agents involved in a project.
It ultimately involves designing the most complete digital model possible, and that contains not only structural information but also architectural, thermal, climatic, electrical, etc. TEKLA is integrated into the BIM process, in addition to being a BIM model itself, by means of the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) language, which is the universal data interchange format used to convert an original format into a universal format. TEKLA uses this format to import both the BIM model with the architectural data made in REVIT and piping layouts made in CADWORK.
Using this quality, importing the BIM models to TEKLA serves as a reference to manage possible interferences or as a basis for the modelling of the metallic structure without dimensional or drawing reading errors, since we have an original model on which to base ourselves. Once the detailing of the metallic structure is finished, TEKLA allows us to transmit the generated data to the global digital BIM model through the IFC interface.
This BIM global digital model can be managed using 4D and 5D programmes to manage the Planning and Control of the Execution of Works such as SYNCHROwhich allows us to keep a daily monitoring of the execution of the project, synchronising at the same time with the measurements and budgets made in PRESTO, and able to control its variations day by day through the progress of work’s execution.
Why is it convenient for a building to have been modeled with BIM technology?
Because many problems can be avoided on the long term. By digitalising the building and obtaining its data, it can be accurately remodelled in case of damage. These data will even be very useful to obtain a budget that avoids costs derived from unnecessary resources. Therefore, accuracy in both costs and results is guaranteed.
“A building modelled with BIM technology can avoid a lot of problems on the long term.”
Undeniably, BIM technology provides many benefits, as well as being an insurance in itself. But, in addition to the aforementioned contributions, it is worth highlighting many others.
Benefits of BIM technology
- Provides real-time updates throughout the project.
- Increases and improves productivity.
- Facilitates realistic visualisation and analysis of the project plan.
- Collaborates in the adjustment of cost factors.
- Allows the constructibility and optimisation of construction and assembly sequences.
- Early corrections can be detailed to save time and money.
- Allows a more efficient management of human resources.
- Provides estimates for purchases, resources and tendering.
- Improved marketing and presentation of construction methods.
Many of our clients such as Técnicas Reunidas, Copisa, Initec and Duro Felguera… trust in our BIM modelling service, and in our professionalism and excellent work. We received an award at the Construsoft BIM Awards for one of our latest projects for TAIM WESER, and will now compete the international final at the TEKLA Global BIM Awards.
Now that you know all about BIM technology, we invite you to get a first-hand look at the mining project that could allow us to win the Tekla Global BIM Adwards,
