Digitization project in a lubricant plant using reverse engineering.
Successful completion of the digitisation project of the ILBOC S.A. plant in Valle de Escombreras, Cartagena, using reverse engineering techniques to obtain a point cloud of the facilities.
The work carried out stems from ILBOC’s commitment to using the plant’s digital model as a centre of operations for day-to-day activities in the maintenance and reliability departmentsmaking use of the advantages offered by the BIM methodology not only in the design and construction phases, but also in the operation and management of the facilities.
ILBOC uses the plant’s digital model as the centre of operations for day-to-day operations in the maintenance and reliability departments, making use of the BIM methodology in the design, construction, operation and management phases of the facilities.
Objectives
The project workflow starts with the laser scanning of the plant, carried out by our colleagues at Dronica using Faro’s tools and the processing and unification of the scanned data in their point cloud registration software.
After that, it is exported to a universal point cloud exchange format, such as “E57”, to be processed for pipe and structural element recognition in the ClearEdge software.
The final As-Built modelling of the plant has been executed in the Bentley OpenPlant 3D modelling software, a platform in which all the data obtained from the previous stage is inserted and which is used as a support to achieve the most accurate virtual model of the plant possible.
The 3D modelling software used is Bentley OpenPlant, a platform used both to input all the data obtained from the previous stage and as a support to obtain a virtual model of the plant that is as accurate as possible.
Distinctive project characteristics
This modelling project stands out for the requirement to include a huge amount of information in the model required by the maintenance and reliability personnel necessary to perform their day-to-day tasks, as well as data contained in the plant’s old Navisworks model.
To successfully overcome this challenge and improve the efficiency of the project, it was decided to develop proprietary automation tools to manage the project’s databases and mass input all this data into the 3D model using the OpenPlant SDK.
With all this updated information provided by the client, the plant has been modelled and verified using the initial point cloud by superimposing both 3D models, achieving all the project objectives successfully.
The quality of the work carried out for ILBOC S.A. was recognised when it was awarded, in 2019, with the dual award for best industrial engineering project by the CGCOII and the AIIRM.
IDEA is currently moving forwards with the development of our BIM Digital Twin product alongside ILBOC, which continues to place its trust in us for the digitisation of its industrial environment and is committed to the benefits that this new methodology can bring to its work ecosystem.
