The future depicted in Minority Report is now the present of the Industry!
‘Minority Report’, a 2002 film starring Tom Cruise, depicted some technologies that might seem a little far from reality, but that today are part of the work routine of some people.
From a very young age, Emilio Sánchez, CEO & Founder of Idea Ingeniería, has been passionate about inventions and technology “In cinema I found the perfect ally in trying to guess the future, with futuristic places, impossible technologies, special effects and magical creatures. It is very likely that the first time audiences saw the film, many viewers thought that fiction might have gone too far”.
Five years before the multi-touch revolution, the interfaces shown in Minority Report made heavy use of multi-touch technology Today, through innovations in digital transformation such as augmented and virtual reality, engineering has been transformed.
For industrial plant projects involving all disciplines (structures, piping, electricity and instrumentation), engineering companies are usingtouch interfaces to display the best solutions, explore details, analyse interferencesand troubleshoot the project. The introduction of augmented reality mobile apps is an excellent example (visuartech and Augment).
Through BIM (Building Information Modelling)technologies, mainly 3D modelling, it is possible to create parallel realities that are very reminiscent of the digital environment where the character John Anderton (Tom Cruise) managed to accurately anticipate crimes. Today an engineer can make other types of predictions, but with very similar interfaces.
In the film, there were video calls (Epson moverio), flying cars (drones) and holograms (hololens), things that today are also essential tools for innovation and the digital transformation of the industry.
“A drone travels very fast and with precision, something that would be very difficult, risky and costly to do with a human, and which can be optimised. Thanks to technology, it is already possible to obtain perfect, error-free reports on the maintenance parameters of structures without putting a collaborator’s safety at risk”
Emilio says.
Similarly, Emilio states that digital transformation is the number one challenge. “The ability to add value to the work using technology is the only way to add value to the projects, reducing costs and errors.”
